Alice Laybourne - When You Go

I don't know a huge amount about Alice Laybourne.  But she has a new video out for her song When You Go which was shot in Allterton Towers in Liverpool.

Alice herself is from Liverpool and is a singer-songwriter who draws her inspirations from Carole King, Kate Bush, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Natasha Bedingfield, Ellie Goulding, Lily Allen and Gabrielle Aplin.

With no website yet and just this song on Soundcloud I will be interested to see what happens over the next 12 months.  She is attracting attention with this song (17,433 and counting) and rightly so, as her voice is beautiful and the song is stunning.  Check out her Facebook page and she is also on Twitter, if that's your thing.

James Bay - Move Together

James Bay is a singer-songwriter from Hitchen who has just released an ep called Dark of the Morning of which Move Together is the lead single.

It's a beautiful song which builds slowly to truly showcase some heartfelt and stunning vocals from James.  Best of all, you can download this ep for free by visiting his Noisetrade page.  So what have you got to lose?

James has been added to the line up at this year's V Festival and will be on the Futures Stage on Saturday 17th August at Weston Park and Sunday 18th August at Hylands Park.  He has opened for Rae Morris across the UK and has also recently played some dates in America to promote this EP.

His heroes are Carole King, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne and James Taylor - and with heroes like that he can't go wrong.  On his website it states "His raw expressions and graveled voice work in a magical unison that captivates audiences and strips pop melodies back to a skeletal efficiency."

The Duckworth Lewis Method - Third Man

So what on earth could convince me to put a track about cricket (which in turn comes from a whole concept album about cricket!) onto The Music Truffler blog?  Well, the fact that Neil Hannon is involved helps a lot... also the fact that it sounds very like the Electric Light Orchestra in style... oh go on then!

So here we have The Duckworth Lewis Method with Third Man which comes from their new album Sticky Wickets.  Watch the video here

The band consist of Neil Hannon (from The Divine Comedy) and Thomas Walsh from Pugwash.  Believe it or not, this is their 2nd cricket inspired album, their first was released in 2009.  The name incidentally comes from a formula which is applied to get the results from a rain-affected game.  There are plenty of guests on the album - Phill Jupitus, Alexander Armstrong, Matt Berry, Daniel Radcliffe (on The Third Man), Stephen Fry - and you don't need to know a single thing about cricket to enjoy it.

Gabriel Kelley - Only Thing To Do

OK, so this isn't a new song.  But it is new to me.  And the rules of Music Truffler blog are that if they aren't new, they should be songs that are rarely heard.  This track by Nashville based and Georgia raised Gabriel Kelly - The Only Thing To Do - comes from his debut album, It Don't Come Easy.  And it certainly didn't for Kelley, who had to raise the majority of the funds ($26,000) with a Kickstarter campaign.  But he was stubborn and committed and grafted for 6 years to get it exactly how he wanted it.

Even thought he might be relatively unknown over here in the UK, he has received some good write ups in the music press and on line.  His work has been described as having the ability to blend "Harvest era Neil Young songcraft with a modern day approach to mine his own emotions in the creation of powerful songs."

Over in the UK during June, and playing around London, most of us sadly won't have had the opportunity to catch him, and I have no idea when he will be coming over gain.  But the album is certainly worth checking out... as is the wonderful video to Only Thing To Do.

Hollis Brown - Ride On The Train

I'm quietly addicted to this album at the moment, and especially to the title song.  Hollis Brown's album Ride On The Train came out in the UK on 5th March and the single, also called Ride On The Train http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GlNKST3_Rc  is a wonderful, chugging piece of Americana - with more than a nod to those 60s and 70s bands such as CCR.

The band, who come from New York City, take their name from a Bob Dylan song and the album contains 10 fabulous tracks whose timelessness is even more remarkable when you consider the young age of all the band members (all born in the early 1990s).  But of course that doesn't matter a bit because good music will always find a way out and many new artists today are discovering this style of writing and singing for themselves these days.

Ride On The Train came to my attention as a free track on a cd that came with a music magazine.  Not a bad cd, but this was the track I kept returning to again and again, until I was intrigued enough to find out more about Hollis Brown.  And I'm glad I did because I know I'll be enjoying their album for a long time to come.

You can try before you buy on Spotify or on www.pastemagazine.com.  And check out their website and Facebook page for more details on the band.

The Reads - Galaxy Egg

OK so this track isn't exactly new - it has been around since 2011 - but it's new to me.  I sometimes wonder how some bands completely pass me by, especially when they live relatively locally, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

The Reads are a Welsh alternative rock band whose debut album, Stories From The Border, was released in 2011.  This song, Galaxy Egg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4nAsW_ncQc comes from that album and is also rather appropriate as we get ever nearer to Easter.

The band have played local venues all over Wales and the North West and in 2010 were approached by a generous friend who offered to fund the cost of recording their first studio album.   Music Producer Jim Spencer, known for his work with Oasis, Doves and The Charlatans, was enlisted to record and mix the album. The project was later joined by Joe Duddell who took time out from working with Elbow to come up with string and brass arrangements for five of the 12 songs.  The album was mastered by Frank Arkwright who has worked with bands such as Arcade Fire, The Smiths and Gomez and the album was played live for the first time at a music venue in Chester to a sell out crowd.

They are currently working on a new album (again produced by Spencer) and can be found performing at local venues such as Telford's Warehouse, and were recently named Artists of the Week on BBC Radio Wales.   Worth watching.

James Skelly & The Intenders - Do It Again

The Coral's James Skelly has just recorded his debut album with his band The Intenders.  Called Love Undercover it contains the single, Do It Againhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=0aVBjvAupUs  released on 12th March.

The album was was self-produced and recorded in Parr Street Studios, Liverpool with fellow Coral members and also members of The Sundowners and Tramp Attack.  It will be released on 3rd June via Skeleton Key Records.

The group have announced that they will tour, starting in Leeds on 6th June and will also play Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, London, Bristol and finishing at Manchester's Gorilla on 15th June.

Do It Again is available as a free download via their website and the album was recorded quickly, often in one or two live takes.  This shows a more direct and immediate approach, says Skelly, rather than the more abstract stuff The Coral did.  But it is very much a band effort and Skelly is keen to point out that Love Undercover isn’t merely an aside to his previous ‘day job’.

“The name is about letting people know it’s not just me and an acoustic guitar,” Skelly says. “I had the songs, but it became a proper group thing very quickly with everyone involved having a big input. It’s that Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers idea.”

Jesse Will - Mama Say

Jesse Will is an unsigned singer-songwriter from Aukland, New Zealand and describes his style as indie-folk, folk, blues and acoustic.  One of his latest songs Mama Say can be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jVntB-93UM4

Says Jesse on his Facebook page "I can't express how excited I am to share this with you all. It's a brand new song, my first music video, and a ridiculous amount of hard work and help from many talented friends went into producing & recording it, and I'm so eternally grateful."

The song itself is part of an ep released on 1st March called Hold Your Cards.  Last year he was named Roundhead Studios' Songwriter of the year and yesterday he set off to Dublin and from there he will head to London with plans to secure a record deal.  He realises it's a risk to choose music as a career and agrees that anyone who does so must be a little crazy.  With no guarantee of any kind of financial stability, he says the good thing about the folk scene is that it's really accessible.  "Everyone's really friendly and they're keen to hear fresh stuff.  You're not going to jeopardise anything because it's just little old you with your guitar."

Temples - Shelter Song

Ever have one of those bands you hear on the radio and think "Hmm, they sound interesting.  Must check them out."  And you never do and you then completely forget about them?  Sadly it happens to me frequently, but in the case of Temples, I was lucky to get a second chance because their track Shelter Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs4i41cOv0s  turned up again on a free cd I received with a music magazine.  So with a track and a full page article, I wasn't likely to forget again.  And they are currently working on an album which is great news as I definitely want to hear more.

Temples call their sound "neo-psych" rather than psychedelia and have fans in high places (Robert Wyatt, Johnny Marr and Suede).  I've just had a look through their Facebook page and their musical selection is good - Can, Flamin' Groovies, Kevin Ayers, Pink Floyd, Love, John's Children - no surprise, listening to them of course.  It's all in there.  Actually I'm still scrolling because.... ah!  Found it!!!  The Zombies and A Butchers Tale.  Knew it would be in there!

Speaking of The Zombies, listen to the B side to Shelter Song,  Prisms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOPB5dXgrPA  See what I mean?

Tom Odell - Can't Pretend

Tom Odell is a 23 year old, Chichester born singer-songwriter who last week was awarded the Brit Award as the Critic's Choice.  He claims to have been writing songs since he was 13 years old but didn't tell anyone at the time because he felt it was "uncool".

Can't Pretend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4-OxOmsqR0 is a track from his latest ep Songs From Another Love and it is the one that stands out most to me.

With an debut album, Long Way Down, due out on 15 April, Tom has already shown he is a force to be reckoned with.  Beside the aforementioned Brit Award, there was also an appearance on Later... with Jools Holland last year, he was announced as one of 15 nominations in the BBC Sound of 2013 poll and his single,  Another Love, was used by the BBC to advertise their schedules.

His influences are the musical greats of the 1970s - Elton John, Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell, Billy Joel... as well as more up to date artists - Arcade Fire, Beach House and Radiohead to name a few.

But of course we have seen these sorts of things happen many times over the years - a new performer emerges whose future appears certain, and then he disappears as quickly as he came.  So only time will tell, I suppose, whether Tom will be different.

Colorama - Do The Pump

Colorama is an indie pop band from Cardiff fronted by Carwyn Ellis.  Essentially Colorama IS Ellis as the other musicians change frequently both in the studio and on stage.  Formed in 2008, Colorama have released six albums and currently have an ep out called Do The Pump http://vimeo.com/57923491

They will be performing at Leaf on Bold Street, Liverpool on 2nd March alongside none other than Edwin Collins, who will be guest DJ.  The show is part of Colorama's European tour to promote Good Music, their fifth studio album released last year through Edwyn Collins' own imprint AED Records. Collins produced the record from his West Heath Studios and let's be honest, this will be an excellent night.

By the way, you should also check out the title track to Good Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oVrOQImbkaM which is sure to get even the laziest of you moving. And there is also a remix by the wonderful Shaun Lee.  https://soundcloud.com/aedrecords/4-good-music-shawn-lees

Hem - Tourniquet

Hem were formed in 1999 and released their debut album, Rabbit Songs, in 2002 to critical acclaim. Since then they have attracted attention with their mix of country, folk and a sort of dreamlike sound and on 2nd April this year they will be releasing their sixth album, Departure and Farewell, from which this track, Tourniquet, comes.http://vimeo.com/58502887

If you like the sound of Hem, you are in luck because once again, you can visit NoiseTrade and download this and the wonderful Walking Past The Graveyard, Not Breathing, as a taster to the new album, along with the whole of Funnel Cloud, absolutely free (although once again, I would recommend 'tipping' the artist!)

Hem come from Brooklyn and consist of Sally Ellyson (vocals), Dan Messé (piano, accordion, glockenspiel), Gary Maurer (guitar, mandolin), and Steve Curtis (guitar, mandolin, banjo, back-up vocals).

Of the new album, Messé explains that “Hem has always been about endings in one way or another (we were named after the ending of a dress, after all), but never more so than here in these songs.” And Ellyson adds “This album is about loss, about the fear of loss and about the trajectory of life…it was one of the more emotionally resonating albums to record.”

Comparing the two songs from the forthcoming album with Funnel Cloud, they appeared to have changed direction ever so slightly and in an interesting way, so I look forward to hearing the full offering on its release.

Foy Vance - Homebird

Foy Vance is another act from the wonderful Communion label.  He hails from County Down in Northern Ireland, and released his first single, Gabriel and the Vagabond in 2006.  Although his songs have featured in TV commercials and within TV programmes themselves, you shouldn't let that put you off.  His songs are very special and his vocal style can range from the ethereal beauty of Something In The Water, to the gutsy blues of Be With Me.

So which song do I put on here?  Well I've gone for Homebird,  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKL1jt7NSCA mainly because it's a a great little film, but I would recommend that you check out his diversity for yourself.   You can download his free noisetrade sampler ep by heading over to his Facebook page.  You can even listen to it first before downloading.  (I say 'free' although you are able to support the artist by leaving a tip - I suggest you do!)

Sean Taylor - So Fine

I really don't know too much about Sean Taylor at the time of writing this because I only listened to one of his tracks, So Fine, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RXhaoFPwvcQ  about an hour ago.  Since then I've visited Soundcloud and his website and listened to a couple more, as well as downloading a free track from his Facebook page.

But anyway, here's what I've managed to find out so far...  Born in 1983 in Kilburn, North London, Sean Taylor is an extremely skilled guitarist.  Frequently compared to John Martyn, Sean is fast gaining the reputation as being one of the hottest new names in the blues and acoustic scene.  As well as headlining his own shows, he has supported artists such as John Fogerty, The Neville Brothers, Band of Horses and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes.  He has performed at the Cambridge and Glastonbury festivals and has a couple more gigs in the UK before setting off to tour Australia in March.  His latest album, Love Against Death, has been hailed as a masterpiece and it joins a further four critically acclaimed albums of fine songs.  Plenty for me to be getting on with then over the coming months.

Ron Sexsmith - She Does My Heart Good

Ron Sexsmith is a Canadian singer-songwriter who formed his own band at just 14 years of age and released his own recordings of his songs just 7 years later.  He set his sights high and wanted to be like his heroes - Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Ray Davies and John Hiatt.  In fact he has managed to win praise from all these celebrities and more, so he should be very pleased with himself.

But Ron is still disappointed that he has not reached the dizzy heights of his heroes.  He does not want to be compared to the likes of Nick Drake and Tim Hardin (as he often is) because, he says, they didn't have much success in their lives.  In 2010, a documentary film appeared called Love Shines which chronicled Ron's attempts to turn his niche following into mainstream success.  But he still remains a musician's musician and it's difficult to see why that might be.

On February 4th, Ron will release Forever Endeavor, his 13th album.  Will it be lucky for him?  One hopes so, because if the track, She Does My Heart Good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bBsuU5Gwwc  is anything to go by, he has lost none of his skill at writing great little earworms.

You can get this track free by the way by heading over to Ron's website and joining his mailing list.  You can also pre-order his album there too.

Matt Corby - Souls a'Fire

Matt Corby is an Australian musician who has only just released his wonderful ep Into the Flame in Europe this month.  It's been out in Australia since 2011 so that's why many of you won't have heard of him before.

Souls a'Fire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_DRxZsAMzQ
can be seen here and this live version was filmed at Scala in London and it is, as Communion put it, 'seriously epic' and his vocals are 'spine tinglingly good'.  It's lazy I know to steal their words but I really can't think of a better way to put it.  And all I want to do right now is convince you to take a listen.   The ep contains 4 great songs: Souls a'Fire,  Brother, Untitled and Big Eyes.

So what else can I tell you about Matt Corby?  Maybe I shouldn't tell you that he began his career aged just 16 years old on Australian Idol, but if we move swiftly on, two years following that he independently released an ep on Scorpion records called Song For...  Then he relocated to London where he was signed by the Communion label.  His early work is acoustic and folky but with the release of Into the Flame, Matt has changed direction somewhat and became much more bluesy and it really suits his vocal and guitar style.

If you are interested, there is a great version on YouTube of Matt covering The Black Keys' Lonely Boy.  And plenty of live footage which prove what an exceptional talent he has.  And he is still only 22 years old so expect to see much more of Matt in the coming years.

Gary Edward Jones - Friends of Mine

Just in case this track was lost to you during the Christmas period and frenzy that was the Hillsborough Justice Campaign's fight for the Christmas number one spot, I am going to post this here today.

Friends of Mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b33uxPYJzpw is the latest release from Liverpool's Gary Edward Jones.  Proceeds from sales will go towards the Help For Heroes charity, formed to help those wounded in Britain's conflicts.

The inspiration for Friends of Mine started when Gary met a group of soldiers at a local retail park who were collecting for Help for Heroes.  On talking to them, he heard of their experiences and reasons for supporting this charity.  Tragically, shortly after this meeting, in November 2011, a friend's son was fatally wounded in Afghanistan.  Gary decided to put his songwriting talents to use in raising money for the injured men an women supported by Help for Heroes.  The single was released at the end of 2012 and has received a lot of interest.

Gary was born and brought up in Liverpool and began playing the guitar at age 11.  Despite a couple of false starts in the music business, he is now supported by a small group of musicians who understand his strengths and help bring these out without losing any of their natural emotion.  Thankfully he is now gaining fans and can be seen playing around the Liverpool area (I caught him at the end of last year).  Often with a story behind them, these songs touch a place deep within the listener and remain with them long after the song has ended.  As a fan of the storytellers from the 1970s such as Harry Chapin, Clifford T Ward etc, I look forward to hearing more from this artist.  You can listen to more of his work on SoundCloud.
